Brigid Lowry
Brigid Lowry was born in New Zealand into a rather strange but very creative family. Here she learned to love books, too many swear words and how to cook a decent omelette. Brigid's early poetry was made into a small book by her father and sold to kindly relatives. Thus was her writing career launched. It took a further twenty years for her to achieve success.
In the interim, she became a hippie, worked a waitress, a software tutor, a librarian, a mother, a wife and a primary school teacher.
At the age of thirty-five, Brigid returned to university and began to publish poetry and short stories. Her first Young Adult book was Fizz & Max & Me, which was a Dolly Fiction title.
Armed with nothing more than the idea about a girl who wanted a nose-ring and in receipt of an Arts Council Grant, Brigid wrote Guitar Highway Rose (1997). It was shortlisted for a number of major awards in Australia and won the WA Hoffman Young Readers' Choice Award.
Guitar Highway Rose was followed by Follow the Blue (2001), a story about fifteen-year-old Bec and what happens when her parents go away for summer and With Lots of Love from Georgia (2005), a story about Georgia, Philosopher Queen and listmaker extraordinaire, and what happens during her bumpy fifteenth year.
I love the world of the imagination and the world of the spirit. I love the world of story and I love the question "What happens next?"
