Tony Davis
Tony Davis has had many jobs through the years, all involving working with words. He has been a book author, publisher, magazine editor, feature writer and broadcaster.
In recent years he filled a variety of senior editorial roles at the Sydney Morning Herald reporting from around the world. He left the paper in 2005 to realise his ambition to write books full-time, though he still produces a weekly newspaper column for them, and for the Melbourne Age. Tony also completes the occasional travel assignment, recently walking the Headhunters Trail through the Borneo rainforest.
Tony has produced high-quality fiction and non-fiction for adults and children, ranging from Lemon!, a best-selling and hilarious book about the worst cars ever made, to F. Scott, Ernest and Me. This was a complex and eccentric literary memoir set in Paris and incorporating parallel fiction and non-fiction strands.
Tony is the father of three young boys and it is with children's fiction that he has achieved the most success. The Roland Wright, Future Knight novel was included in the "Notable Book of 2007" list by the Children's Book Council, while the Sunday Age described it as "perfect for early readers... cheeky and charming". Its follow-up Brand New Page has been reviewed as "one of the most entertaining, worthwhile books for children this age...a delight to read. Highly recommended." The Sydney Morning Herald described the third book At the Joust as follows "Roland is a tremendously likeable character...an inspiration for young readers."
Tony has also written two children's non-fiction books about cars You Must be Skidding and Are You for Wheel?, plus The Mad Mad World of Sports, a lively romp through odd moments, interesting people and dangerous pastimes – with delightful illustrations by Leigh Hobbs.
Tony is currently working on a literary novel for adults, further volumes detailing the adventures of Roland Wright, and a fiction series for lower primary students.
He is an experienced and entertaining speaker who can share his experience and expertise on writing fiction and non-fiction, and of working in the media. He can also deliver compelling workshops on creative writing, non-fiction, or writing for newspapers and magazines.
