Shalini Akhil
Shalini Akhil is a Melbourne-based writer who has also dabbled in stand-up comedy. She was a national finalist in the 2003 Raw Comedy Competition, and has had short fiction published in anthologies and online. An earlier version of her first novel was shortlisted for the 2004 Victorian Premier’s Literary Award for an Unpublished Manuscript. She holds a Graduate Diploma in Professional Writing from Deakin University.
Shalini is Indo-Fijian by heritage, and was brought up in Fiji and Australia. Her first novel, The Bollywood Beauty, deals with issues familiar to many people irrespective of their background: the search for identity and belonging, culture shock, and sometimes seeing the world through the eyes of an outsider looking in.
Currently working on her second novel, Shalini is available for talks and workshops with secondary school students and adults.
