Sherryl has been writing poems and stories for over 20 years, and her first children's book, The Too-Tight Tutu, grew from a writing exercise in a class. She has since used lots of her own experiences in her books, including coming dead last in a cross-country race and watching a TV show being filmed.
Her other titles include a number of Aussie Bites, Nibbles and Chomps such as The Littlest Pirate, Boots and All and Batter Up. She has also written three short novels for Year 7-8 students. Her novel for 9-12 year olds, Up a Tree, is set in the country and features a crazy parrot called Pecker who rides in Grandma's car. Her picture book, Wednesday Was Even Worse, was a CBC Notable Book and is still being read on Playschool.
While attending Summer School at Fresno University in California in 2002, Sherryl began to write poems about growing up on a farm and these eventually developed into her new verse novel Farm Kid.
Sherryl worked in community writing for many years, running workshops all around Victoria on writing and self-publishing. Since 1996 she has been teaching in the Diploma of Arts – Professional Writing and Editing at Victoria University TAFE and Holmesglen TAFE. Subjects taught include poetry, novel writing, short story writing, myths and symbols, and writing for children and young adults.
Sherryl's adult titles include two collections of poetry, Edge and Thicker Than Water, and a how-to guide, Successful Self-Publishing. She also co-edits a poetry magazine, Poetrix, and is a long-time member of Western Women Writers.
She is available for talks and workshops with both children and adults.
