Juliette Kent
Juliette grew up in Kyabram in country Victoria. This gave her a great love of the Australian bush, animals and colour. Growing up, she had to make her own entertainment, as TV didn't start until 4pm. Her time was filled with drawing, painting and talking with her best friend, who also loved books.
Training in Graphic Art at RMIT in the late 70's, Juliette majored in illustration and has now illustrated books in both Australia and America.
Juliette loves to create quirky and colourful characters, draw animals and will encourage children to do the same. She gives children drawing tasks and guides them to create their own pictures and storybooks.
The process of book production, from an illustrator's perspective, is also an area she enjoys sharing, as she walks students through rough sketches, changing ideas and interpretations, through to the finished artwork.
Professionally, Juliette has worked for Oxford University Press for 10 years as their in-house illustrator on Primary, Secondary and Tertiary educational texts, including Science, Geography and English titles. She has also worked in major Melbourne hospitals, with both children and teenagers, developing art workshops as a support therapy.
Juliette has toured a number of Victorian primary schools, showcasing her illustrative talents with both pen and computer and telling students about her dog Ladybug and her pet duck Wilmer. As one boy from Mentone Grammar observed "I think you have a wonderful duck and you are a great artist!"
Juliette's titles include:
- Oh Bother (Scholastic / Bookshelf)
- The Old Woman who Lived in a Vinegar Bottle (Scholastic)
- How to Cook Scones (Scholastic)
- Oh No (Mondo / New York)
- Shoes in Twos (Rigby / America)
