Kevin Burgemeestre
Kevin's new books (written by Lucy Farmer) are due out in February 2009. The first two titles in this series will be released concurrently: Uncle Eddie and The Hippo Mowers and Uncle Eddie and The Croc. Based on Lucy's brother's experiences managing – as a total novice - a game park in Africa, his learning curve was somewhat accentuated by having to deal with crocodiles and hippos. Not for the faint-hearted. Using acrylic paints for illustrations, Kevin captures the leathery textures of the startling critters and the changing romantic light of Africa. Hold on tight!
Kevin and family were lucky enough to tour Europe last year and one of the highlights was a visit to the Frankfurt Book Fair where it was great to meet editors of German children's books and show examples of recent work.
Kevin recently completed a stint on the Victorian panel of May Gibbs Children's Literature Foundation. He is currently writing short stories, as well as creating a picture book based on one family's experience of the 1940's when Australians were shipped to war on various fronts, dramatically changing the fate of many families. In it, a boy discovers papers of his unknown Great-grandfather's experience as a tail gunner over Germany.
Kevin has also recently completed diorama workshops for children at the Australian War Memorial, based on his aviation book B is for Bravo.
Kevin enjoys working with children of all ages presenting talks, demonstrations and workshops, helping reluctant writers and illustrators get started. Rubbers banned! Show & Tell Promotions has booked Kevin for stimulating workshops at schools as diverse as Jewish schools and government primary schools and is experienced as an artist in residence. Kevin has a passion for working with schools that do not have access to authors and illustrators. He looks forward to working with your school.
