Mitch Vane
Mitch really loves to draw. Her mum was a painter and fashion illustrator and Mitch grew up watching her working on some arty project or another, so it was a given that she would end up doing something similar.
Mitch has been working as a freelance illustrator for over twenty years now, five of those based in London. Over those years she has worked in a variety of mediums on a variety of jobs – anything from storyboards, posters, package design, colouring books, cartoons, editorial illustrations and paintings.
She works in a rickety shed posing as a studio in the back yard of her home in Melbourne. She works with a variety of mediums, including acrylic paint and watercolour, but is happiest with a good old-fashioned dip pen and Indian ink. All of Mitch's work is wonky and messy: she doesn't like drawing cars or anything too technical – she can't draw a straight line, even with a ruler! Her desk is usually covered in paper, paint tubes, ink splotches, water bottles, empty tea cups, pencil shavings and biscuit crumbs.
Mitch has illustrated children's books with many different publishers in Australia and around the world, and recently illustrated a series of twelve Zodiac stamps for Australia Post.
Her partner Danny Katz, is a writer and also works from home. Mitch's cartoons have appeared with his weekly column in The Age for the past thirteen years and they have collaborated on many books together including The Little Lunch series, A Little Election, Big Bad Bunnies, The Parents Are Revolting, and they have just completed The Little Lunch Games. Mitch and Danny have a daughter Talia, and a son Jordie, and they are a constant source of inspiration to them both.
