Jutta Goetze

Jutta Goetze – screenwriter.

Co-creator and writer Bed of Roses, the life-affirming series on ABC TV

What makes a good film or television series?Jutta Goetze

Strong characters are hugely important for the screen. Strong themes. Strong mood. Good ideas. Psychological insight. Emotion. Heart. The stories have to mean something.

These are the same requirements as with a book. But film is such a different medium, it tells its stories through pictures. Scenes. Dialogue and actions - the outward portrays the inward. Film must capture the literary essence or voice as words do, in literature. This is what the screenwriter strives for, and, which is later what the director, actors, the camera, the editing and the music aim to achieve.

Jutta's television work as editor and writer spans 30 years. It began with Skyways and Cop Shop, All the Rivers Run, The Flying Doctors, All the Way, Embassy, The Man from Snowy River, Janus, Phoenix, Simone de Beauvoir's Babies, Halifax fp, Good Guys Bad Guys, Always Greener, The Saddle Club and more. Jutta has adapted Morris Gleitzman's Stickybeak' for an English co-production; she has worked with Morris developing 'Deadly' into an animation series for Channel Nine for which she has written the pilot episode.

Most recently Jutta created and co-wrote Bed of Roses, the story of Louisa Atherton, who, approaching the age of 50 has to start her life again. The series took six years to finally reach the screen. It’s a labour of love. And in the meantime, Jutta herself has approached and passed that magic five oh.

So talking about Bed of Roses will be for adults only! But they do say that fifty is the new thirty... don't they?
