Sarah Mayor Cox
Sarah Mayor Cox is a lecturer in the School of Education at La Trobe University, Bendigo. She lectures in literacy education and children's literature to primary and secondary pre-service teachers.
In her spare time she reviews and writes books and is heavily involved in Australia's three peak literacy/children's literature organisations:
- Vice President of Central Victorian Local Council of Australia's Literacy Educators' Association;
- Member of the Victorian Executive of The Children's Book Council of Australia's Victorian Branch and co-convenor of the CBCA Crichton Award for Illustration
- Vice President of IBBY Australia
Sarah is also the co-convenor of the Biennial LaTrobe University, Bendigo Children's Literature Conferences.
Her passion is children's literature but particularly children's book illustration.
Sarah's interactive workshops include:
- Texts Mark the Spot: Using Picture Books in Secondary Schools (half day / full day/ or two half day PD's by negotiation with the group)
- Poetry for Poetry Phobic Teachers: Ways to Use Poetry in Primary Schools
- Books, Babies and Beyond – a workshop for new parents
- Text Audit: Are you Walking your Talk? A four part audit of school practice concerning text use in schools
Sarah also runs a "Crach Course" in children's literature designed for new graduate primary teachers or teachers returning to study who need to update their working knowledge of current children's literature, authors/illustrators, resources, publishing and teaching trends. (Usually two half days and one full day, by negotiation with the school cluster.)
Finally, Sarah can offer the following workshop to teachers and students endeavouring to come to grips with aspects of the new VELS curriculum.
- Inspiring Teachers and Students to Think Big: Post Modern Picture Books and the Thinking Curriculum.
- One full day or two half days in which teachers (and students) are provided with a practical, hands-on day coming to grips with VELS. Full notes and Resource Packages are provided for each participant.
