Mary-Lou Keaney
Long, long ago and far away across a wide ocean, was a small but happy kingdom. In a big castle, upon the highest hill, lived a king . . .
My mother once said "take something that you love doing and try to make a career of it! That's what I've done. I feel so lucky to have found a profession which enables me to storytell each day and call it work at the same time. Coming from a primary teaching background, I'm very familiar with the needs of young children.
In my storytelling I use:
- Balloons
- Puppets
- Drawing stories
- Songs
- Rhymes
- String stories
This gives opportunities for the children to engage creatively on their journey into the world of story and imagination. 15 years of storytelling has taken me to nearly every state in Australia, schools, libraries, fairy shops, homes and the Government Expo at the Royal Melbourne Show. Early Learning Centres are my main focus at the moment but I am happy to chat about adapting my range of programs for other audiences.
Themes include:
- On the beach
- Farmyard
- Traditional tales
- Space
- Dinosaurs
- Minibeasts
- Occupations
- Christmas
- At the pond
- Folk tales, myths and legends
I also present as a memorable Tooth Fairy!!!
Mary-Lou's use of visual material and coming dressed as a fairy was wonderful for the children. They enjoyed the magic of the storytelling and the fairy dust, wishes and stories. The talking suitcase was great!Ann Slater, Narre Warren Central Pre School
Mary-Lou is just the best. Every year at the Royal Melbourne Show she wows thousands of kids and adults with her unforgettable and unequivocal sense of humour, fun and storytelling. She's just the must and the very very best. Daryl Rogon The Royal Melbourne Show
The students were enthralled with her stories. Her repertoire was extensive. Her string plays were excellent as was her incidental use of felt boards and balloons to illustrate characters in her stories. Student participation was also a strong feature of her program. I can recommend her most highly. Sit back and relax. You'll enjoy her sessions immensely. Linda Baron Chirnside Park School
